aThe Sciatic Nerve is the most prominent nerve in the entire body. The sciatic nerve begins in the lower back and travels down through the buttock and into the leg, branching into individual nerve roots. 

Sciatica is a term that is used to refer to a stinging, burning, or numbing pain that can be felt along the course of the sciatic nerve. 

Even if you experience pain in the leg or buttock, the root of the cause could be coming from the lower spine. Sciatic pain can occur without any actual pain to the lower back, and in the same notion, low back pain does not necessarily mean you have sciatica. 

Sciatica can be caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve, or by irritation of one of the nerves that makes up the sciatic nerve.
